You Don't Have to Follow Society's Script
Rob Bialostocki saying you're free
I don't know about you, but I've spent far too much of my life influenced by the script. At least, the one I thought I was supposed to follow.

Get a university education. Start a career. Have a family. Get loaded with debt. Rush around achieving things. Look good in front of others. Juggle lots of balls. Own a nice house. Grow this, build that. Watch the news. Stay online.

I've come to realise that's exactly what it is, a script written by Society. There are some worthwhile things in that list, sure. But taken together, it's exhausting.

Many people reach their 50s and 60s, sometimes earlier, and think: I don't want to do this anymore. Or, that was then, but I want something different now. Something quieter. Less frantic.

The truth is, there is no script we have to follow. We are free, and always have been, to write our own.

Our own version of what matters, what we value, and who we want to be — especially in the second half of life.

So, a gentle challenge: question Society's script. Work out what actually matters to you. Then live by that.

You're entirely free to write your own story.
